VenCo by Cherie Dimaline
“People get it wrong. The magic’s not in the person. The magic is in the place. It just takes the right kind of person to pull it up. “
I am obsessed with this book. I would even say it is a must-read for fall. ✨✨✨✨✨
Cherie Dimaline wrote a novel that has the most mysterious witchy vibes, and engaging storyline, and strong political commentary.
With reflections on motherhood, patriarchy, sisterhood, capitalism, respect for elders, respect for the land, the power of dreams, lesbian representation, adventure, mystery…the list of reasons to love this book is long.
VenCo follows the main character, Lucky St. James, on her discovery of her own power, history, and autonomy. As she becomes part of a community and finds a larger purpose, she discovers the deep love she has for the women in her life and how to tap into that love as a means of true power for good.
I am also a sucker for witchy novels because I love historical references to the Inquisitions and the Reformation. I took several classes on during my undergrad on these topics, including a very specific history lecture on the witch trials and how they developed from anti-semitism to sexism to religious fanaticism. What is witchcraft really other than a connection to the land that others don’t understand? There is power in the energy all around us. Cherie Dimaline includes just enough historical accuracy to make you feel connected to the world of the novel, and enough (mildly shocking) plot twists to keep you unable to put it down.
This book scratched all my nerdy itches while also being an incredible story that feels warm and cozy for a fall read.
It’s a gorgeous story with the perfect mix of mystery, surprise, political undertones, and an attachment to the main character that grows throughout the novel as you worry for her success.
This is a witchy read I highly recommend you add to your tbr this fall! 🌙✨🧙♀️
